Ephemeral Reflection celebrates femininity at Arcadia

Leading and aspiring women artists are displaying artworks celebrating femininity in a mixed media exhibition titled Ephemeral Reflection under way at the Arcadia Arts Gallery at Banani in the capital.

The exhibition is featuring 60 artworks — 46 acrylic works, four watercolour paintings and 10 sculptures.

The exhibition has been organised by women artist’s group Shako.

Artist Kuhu, one of the founding members of Shako, gave the welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony.

‘Fareha Zeba, Kanak Chanpa Chakma and I founded Shako 16 years ago. The organisation gradually gained nine members. We have been regularly organising art workshops and exhibitions,’ said Kuhu, adding, ‘We have organised workshops for acid survivors, terminally ill cancer patients and others. Although we have faced many hurdles and difficulties, Shako has remained totally a benevolent group.’

The exhibition was jointly inaugurated by ruling Awami League lawmaker Aroma Dutta and executive director of Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha Rokeya Kabir on Friday.

Members of Shako, namely Naima Haque, Farida Zaman, Fareha Zeba, Kuhu, Kanak Chanpa Chakma, Rebeka Sultana Moly, Shulekha Chaudhury, Farzana Islam Milky and guest artists, namely Sumana Akter, Lubna Charya and Atia Maibam are displaying their works at the two-week long exhibition.

The inaugural ceremony was conducted by the curator of this exhibition Ashim Halder Sagor.

Among the artworks, Rebeka Sultana Moly’s acrylic painting titled Unknown Love-98 shows a woman painted yellow wearing a face mask adorned with tiny flowers.

Farzana Islam Milky has displayed 10 sculptures, among which four have been displayed under a series titled Mother and Musician.

Farida Zaman’s acrylic painting titled Sufia shows a woman carrying fishes.

Sumana Akter’s watercolour painting titled A Birth Story shows a fetus.

Naima Haque’s acrylic painting titled Joy shows a woman in white saree.

Kanak Chanpa Chakma has displayed an acrylic painting titled Story Hills. The work shows figures resembling women and different glass bottles. The painting is dominated by blue and green colours.

Kuhu’s acrylic painting titled Sada Saree Lal Par depicts a woman wearing a white saree with red border.

Lubna Charya’s watercolour painting titled Out Heart also needs Food shows a giant heart placed next to a woman. The heart, which is connected to the woman’s, has opened its mouth to eat a flower in front of it.

Fareha Zeba’s acrylic on canvas work titled Transformation of Seeds shows a blood-red seed.

Shulekha Chaudhury’s acrylic on canvas work titled Shokhi shows two women figures made of leaves, which are mirror images of each other. The two figures are separated by barbed wire covered with hibiscus flower.

The exhibition will continue till October 7.
